Study Permits

Who Needs a Study Permit?

A study permit is required for anyone that wants to study in Canada for 6 months or more. Study permits will only be issued for study as Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs).

  • Uchenna Academy is a DLI and our DLI number is 884350
  • You do not need a provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) to study at Uchenna Academy

If studying in Canada for less than 6 months, you can do so as a visitor (ie. no study permit is required, but you may need a TRV or eTA to enter Canada as a visitor).

First (initial) Study permit (applications processed outside Canada)

When to Apply

A study permit application can take many months to be processed. It is a good idea to apply as soon as you have your proof of admissions to Uchenna Academy.

  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) publishes regularly updated expected processing times
  • USA citizens and permanent residence have the option of applying when they enter Canada (processing is dine immediately)

How to Apply

Generally, you must apply for a study permit before you come to Canada.

STEP 1: Get your documents ready!

Here is a list of documents you should have ready, in pdf form, scanned and in colour. All documents must be in English or French. Translated documents must be certified and accompanied  by a copy of the original document used for the translation.  

    1. Student passport
    2. Proof of past travel including passport stamps, visas and or other support documents
    3. Student birth certificate listing your parent(s) 
    4. Academic Documents – notarized 
      • Try the local police department – they may notarize at no charge!
      • Transcripts for grade 9 and above. If the student is in grade 8, send only grade 7 and 8 transcripts/report cards (NOT entire elementary school)
      • Any certificates, awards, academic / athletic recognition received
    5. Digital photo. Student name and signature on the back of the photo 
    6. Guardianship / Custodianship Documents (2, one from parents and one from guardian in Canada) 
      • Uchenna Academy will complete one form (page 1) – Uchenna will notarize in Canada
      • Parents have to complete the second form (page 2) – must be notarized in home country
    7. Immigration Medical Exam (IME) – this is needed for SOME countries – click HERE to see if your country needs it.
    8. Study Plan letter – Letter of Explanation why the student wants to study in Canada
    9. OPTIONAL: Parental Support letter – OPTIONAL but helps. 
    10. PROOF OF FUNDS
        • Showing proof of $10,000 CAD 
        • Bank statement(s) for the most recent 6-month period showing an available balance to cover academic and living expenses in Canada 
        • Letter(s) of employment from parent including the employer’s name and address, telephone and email; your parent’s date of hire, position, current salary 
        • Paystubs for the most recent 3-month period 
        • Recent tax documents showing income reported 
        • If you own a business: business registration, proof of business activity (e.g. business bank account, business tax documents, etc.) 
    11. OPTIONAL: Any additional documents showing your ties (and your family’s ties) to your home country (e.g. proof of home ownership, land and other assets, etc.)
    12. Uchenna Academy to provide a Letter of acceptance (LOA) that includes: 
      • Listing program start and end date(s) 
      • All services included in the program (e.g. accommodations, meals, transportation, etc.
      • Scholarship / financial assistance: documents from the school and / or funding agency on official letterhead stating the full amount of the award, its duration period and any governing conditions 
      • We require both parent passports, date of birth, address and phone numbers

STEP 2. Apply for a study permit on government of Canada website:

  • You must pay the Study Permit Fee ($150 CAD) and Biometrics Fee ($85 CAD).
  • You need to upload all the pdf documents (from STEP 1 above) and answer questions in the following sections:
    • Personal details
    • Contact Information
    • Details of intended study in Canada questions are as follows:

STEP 3: Pay for the study permit online using a VISA: $150 CAD  and Biometrics Fee of $85 CAD

How to download and open the web forms:
