POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

Prep School Admissions at Uchenna Academy

Uchenna Academy will place every Uchenna student in an important college, university or other institution of higher education. Our guidance department is a perfect bridge between our students and university admissions offices (OUAC).  We individually provide support with both the Common Application (USA) and Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) applications to ensure all students meet the criteria and deadlines during their university application process.

STEP 1: “CAST A WIDE NET”

Finding a college or university in Canada or USA can be a daunting process. Uchenna Academy will be there to help you every step of the way.

For schools in USA, find a school that is a good fit by accessing the following links:

  • Princeton Review USA College search: HERE.
  • NCAA – DI, II, III school search: HERE (Simon Fraser U. is the only DII in Canada)
  • NAIA school search: HERE

For Canadian schools Uchenna Academy uses MyBlueprint (access available at Uchenna Academy to current students).

STEP 2: COMPLETE AN APPLICATION

Grade 12 academic application timeline:

  • November 1: Early registrations due for USA Universities through the Common Application
  • Early January: Application deadline for Ontario Universities (OUAC)

STEP 3: APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Tips when searching for scholarships:
  • Sign up for a lot of scholarship sites (fastweb, Thurgood Marshall, Scholarship owl, Black Caucus etc)
  • Google search local scholarships (type in: name of city/state, then the word scholarship)
  • Check the desired school’s website, they often have recommendations for outside scholarship sites
  • Dedicate 1-2 hours everyday filling out scholarship apps. (Start in Grade 12 – October)
  • Write 4-5 essays and videos that you can recycle (and tweek when necessary)
    • Prompts that appear frequently (so keep these essays on deck):
      • what is your career choice and why
      • how will your career choice benefit society
      • how will this scholarship help you
      • explain a time where you showed leadership
      • why did you choose your desired college
      • a time when you contributed to your community and how it changed you
      • biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome
****also do a separate quick 1-2min videos on all of those prompts (basically summarized her essays) because some scholarships ask for video instead of written.
  • Parents/guardians should have access to your email, plus have copies of your info to fill out the apps while the student-athlete is in school (resume, transcripts, rec letters, essays etc).
  • Plus Facebook groups:
    • Scholarship City USA
    • Scholarship Help and College Talk for Parents
    • College Bound Village (CBV): Scholarships Found for the College Bound
    • Spelman Moms With Kids Needing Scholarships, Internships & College Support
    • (search to see if your desired school has a fb scholarship page).
